The most common question that I hear from BFing mothers is, “How do I increase my milk flow?”
We all have our expectations when it comes to…just about anything. We have all seen serene images of the bond between mother and child while breastfeeding. It seems pleasant and awe-worthy. All. The. Time. And though it IS intimate and beautiful, sometimes it can be nerve-wrecking and downright draining when your tits don’t comply.
Usually, it takes a few days postpartum for you to see and feel a consistent milk flow. Once that is regulated, you can actually increase your flow and make pumping milk less of a hassle. Galactagogue, ” (from Greek: γάλα [γαλακτ-], milk, + ἀγωγός, leading) is a substance that promotes lactation in humans and other animals. It may be synthetic, plant-derived, or endogenous.” -Wikipedia.
I find I produce a lot more when I am CONSTANTLY snacking. It sounds fun, but for me, it’s kind of exhausting.
Here’s some of my favorite foods:
WATER
Consuming plenty of liquids is important for lactation because…yinno…milk’s a liquid…so yeah. Don’t feel pressured by older folks who may tell you your newborn needs water. Water is in the milk 😉
MALTS/NON-ALCOHOLIC BEERS
Malt and brewer’s yeast are found in these drinks. They give your flow a good boost!
SUNFLOWER SEEDS
It can be any nut you prefer, they’re all awesome. I took it up a notch and made milk!
LACTATION COOKIES
Yessss indulge in these! The only uncommon ingredient in these are brewer’s yeast. Everything else is oats, flaxseed, chocolate chips and your preferred nut. I have purchased and made these. (NOTE: If you live with your bf/spouse they may eat them.lol.Heads up)
FRUITS/NATURAL JUICES
Mix it up! Berries and citrus fruits are ideal in a smoothie. This one had papaya, mango juice, ginger, beets and dates.
MOTHER’S MILK TEA
I saw an increase the day after drinking a cup or two. Has a weird taste…
GRANOLA
OATMEAL
FLAXSEEDS
Tons of fiber and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Can be added to smoothies, yogurt, baked goods.
MORINGA
One of the most healthiest greens you can eat. Learn more about moringa on my IG page: Moringa Girl 242
To end, here are more foods to consider:
Keep Calm and Snack On.
This was definitely a major issue of mine and unfortunately I ended up quitting bfeeding at 3 months. It also didn’t help to having to go back to work either. You’re such an amazing mama J! Thanks for the share hopefully this will make my second time muchore easier!
